Barking gives a tiler three distinct kinds of work. There is the flats: the blocks around the Gascoigne and Thames View, plus a lot of privately let property, where the job is usually a tired bathroom turned round quickly and cleanly between tenants — waterproofed properly behind the bath rather than tiled straight onto plasterboard and left to fail in a year. There is the older terraced and semi stock through Longbridge, Movers Lane and Rippleside, where bathrooms tend to be small, awkward and full of pipe boxing, and the whole job is in the setting out: start the run in the middle so the cuts fall evenly, keep the boxing tiled in properly instead of trimmed round, and the room reads twice the size. Then there is Barking Riverside, where the walls are flat and true and the work is a different discipline again — large-format porcelain, tight tolerances, and a developer's spec to match. Whichever yours is, the same things decide whether it looks right in ten years: a sound flat substrate, the run set out before a single tile goes up, proper waterproofing where water actually goes, and cuts landing where nobody looks. A small bathroom, walls and floor, is usually three to four days including the strip-out. A wet room with tanking runs closer to a week. You get the days in writing before we start.
Either. Most people pick their own and we tell you honestly how much to order — always add ten percent for cuts and breakages. We can supply if you would rather not.
Sometimes, if they are sound, flat and well stuck. Usually it is the wrong call — it buries a problem and pushes the tiles proud of the window reveal. We will tell you straight which yours is.
